This Month: Join Us for the 2025 Twin Cities Kidney Walk

Chronic Kidney Disease is often called a “silent disease” because many people don’t realize they have it until symptoms become severe. For the past several years, ANC has proudly participated in the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) Kidney Walk. The walk is an annual event that brings much-needed attention to CKD while celebrating the strength and resilience of the kidney community! To share a bit more on the positive impact of the Kidney Walk and why you (yes, you!) should join, we sat down with Dr. Otteman to gather some of his insights.

Why the NKF Kidney Walk Matters

The NKF Kidney Walk offers more than just a chance to raise awareness. It’s a time to connect, reflect, and advocate. The event brings together patients, transplant recipients, caregivers, medical professionals, and local organizations who share a common goal: to make kidney disease more visible and to support those affected by it.

Dr. Otteman shares that in past years, we’ve seen people walk in honor of loved ones, to reconnect with their care teams, or to learn about kidney health resources for the first time. Local universities, transplant centers, and national leaders such as DaVita and Fresenius Medical Care also attend to show their support for the community and provide attendees with relevant resources.

Why Walk in 2025?

This year, the National Kidney Foundation is highlighting an important message: it’s okay to “make the ask.” Inspired by campaigns like “Be the Match” for bone marrow, NKF is encouraging patients to start conversations about living kidney donation. Many transplant centers offer tailored resources to help individuals talk about living donation with friends, family, and potential donors. If you or someone you know is waiting for a transplant, we encourage you to reach out to your care team or transplant center for help navigating these conversations.

Thinking of taking the next step and signing up for the walk? There’s still time to join ANC’s team! Join us on Saturday, October 11th at 9 AM at Allianz Stadium. Come say hi, bring a friend, and walk with us for the cause.
