Dietary Tips for the Holidays and Beyond

The holidays are a joyful time filled with family, festivities, and, of course, plenty of food! But for those living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) or managing conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, diet becomes an especially important factor. This week, ANC’s PA and dietitian, Ella Harpole, shares a few kidney-friendly holiday eating tips to help you celebrate while still caring for your health.

 

Why Diet Matters for Kidney Health

Many underlying causes of kidney disease are directly influenced by what we eat. Conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity can lead to kidney disease. These conditions are often strongly related to an individual’s diets. For example high in sodium, sugar, or processed foods can worsen these conditions, which will affect the kidneys. In addition to this, those with more advanced kidney disease often need to work on balancing potassium and phosphorus as well.

 

Smart Swaps for Holiday Gatherings

Traditional holiday dishes often come loaded with salt, butter, or high-potassium ingredients like pumpkin and potatoes. Bringing a dish you know is safe for your diet can be a simple step that helps you enjoy the festivities with confidence. 

 

In terms of preparation, there are so many neat ways to make your dishes kidney-friendly without compromising flavor. For instance, cooking something with high potassium? Ella suggests the “double-boil” method, where you essentially boil something once, discard the starchy water, and then boil it again! 

 

You can also experiment with herbs and spices instead of salt to enhance flavor. In making substitutions, be cautious with “salt substitutes,” as many contain potassium chloride, which may not be suitable for every kidney patient. Products like Mrs. Dash can be a flavorful, sodium-free alternative.

 

Finally, limiting phosphorus-heavy foods like deli meats, dark sodas, and processed dairy helps reduce long-term strain on your kidneys. And no matter the season, moderation is key!

After a big meal, it’s great to get some movement in. Walks are a great opportunity for friends and family to connect while supporting digestion, blood sugar balance, and making the holidays even more memorable with a wellness-based tradition.
