We are beyond excited to be celebrating the arrival of a new member joining the ANC team! Dr.
Christopher Yang is our newest addition, eager to start providing care for patients and making a
tangible difference in our community.
Hailing from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada initially before growing up in Michigan, Dr. Yang
attended undergrad at the University of Kansas where he received his B.S. in Biology before
attending medical school at the University of Cincinnati. Aspiring for something new in a bustling
environment, Dr. Yang and his wife, Jessica, decided to make the big move to Colorado where
he began the rigorous pursuit of his fellowship.
His fondness of the Midwest was not forgotten over the years, however. Given his time and
history in the area, it felt natural to relocate to Minnesota after landing the opportunity to be a
Nephrologist with ANC. After moving with his beautiful family of three, Dr. Yang is looking
forward to beginning his work at ANC! Read on to learn about his passion for kidney care,
patient philosophy, personal interests, and how you can get scheduled with him.
Why Nephrology?
Throughout his medical education, Dr. Yang recounts having always been drawn to the
fascinating and delicate function of the body’s filtration system. This, coupled with the
burgeoning advancements in the field over the past two decades, made Nephrology a shoo-in
for Dr. Yang when choosing his specialty. Though Nephrology covers an impressive breadth of
subject matter, Dr. Yang speaks to his scientific passions within the area of home dialysis. “…I
think it’s the direction that Nephrology is heading to… and I feel really prepared in that line”.
But, in addition to his love for the science behind it, Dr. Yang ultimately chose Nephrology for
the people: “I think the kidney is an organ that does a lot more for the body than people think
about, but I also really just enjoy taking care of patients who live with advanced kidney disease
and often need things like dialysis to replace their kidneys and then, hopefully, a transplant from
there to have a more normal life… I got into it because of the medicine, but fell in love with the
people involved”.
Approach to Fostering Quality Patient-Doctor Relationships
When asked about some of the most memorable moments from his prior experiences, Dr. Yang
recounts the impact of having worked with so many patients. They serve as an engrained
reminder to him about how he and other physicians ought to tread the line between treating an
illness vs. treating a patient, and the importance of bearing in mind how each patient is unique.
“Nephrology is important but I also think it’s important to take a step and make sure we’re not
missing the bigger picture of what a patient really needs,” says Dr. Yang when asked about
building patient-doctor relationships.
“It can get lost, how difficult it is to have a chronic medical condition – especially one that’s fairly
subtle like chronic kidney disease. Often, granting a sense of grace to our patients… perhaps
gets a bit minimized compared to ‘Here’s the perfect regimen!’”. For Dr. Yang, being the
physician who makes decisions alongside their patients, rather than isolated from them, garners
not only better advocacy but better outcomes as well.
His ultimate career goal boils down to his aspiring impact: “I want to be a pillar in the community
that speaks for patients and helps to make decisions that support them”.
Personal Interests
When he’s not booked with caring for patients and practicing medicine, Dr. Yang cherishes time
with his family. He and his wife, Jessica, are high school sweethearts and have been married for
almost 8 years! With their three-year-old son, Oliver, they look forward to exploring the Twin
Cities restaurant scene and Minnesota's lakes and state parks. Dr. Yang also enjoys board and
card games and going to bluegrass concerts.
