Many people are surprised to learn exactly where their kidneys sit. Understanding kidney location can help you recognize when pain might be coming from your kidneys instead of your back muscles or spine.
Where Are Your Kidneys?
Your kidneys are two bean shaped organs located toward the back of your abdomen, on either side of your spine. They sit roughly at the level of your lower ribs, protected partly by your rib cage. Most people have one kidney on the left and one on the right, though their exact height can vary slightly from person to person.
Where Do You Feel Kidney Pain on Your Back?
Kidney pain is usually felt in the area known as the flank, which is the side of your back between your lowest rib and your hip. It often appears on just one side, depending on which kidney is affected, though both sides can be involved. Some people feel it as a deep ache, while others feel it wrap toward the front of the body near the abdomen or groin.
How to Tell If Pain Is Coming From Your Kidneys
A few clues can point toward the kidneys rather than muscles or the spine:
- The pain sits high on your side, near the bottom of your rib cage
- It stays constant, rather than changing with movement or position
- It is paired with fever, nausea, or urinary changes
- Pressing or pushing on the area does not clearly reproduce the pain, unlike a strained muscle
What Can Cause Pain in the Kidney Area?
Pain in this location can come from kidney stones, kidney infections, urinary tract blockages, or occasionally kidney cysts. Since muscles, ribs, and spinal nerves also run through this same region, back and kidney pain can sometimes feel similar, which is why an evaluation is helpful when you are unsure.
When to See a Doctor
Contact a healthcare provider if pain in this area lasts more than a couple of days, feels severe, or is joined by fever, chills, nausea, or changes in your urine. Getting checked early can help identify the cause and start the right treatment sooner.
Seek emergency care immediately for sudden severe pain with high fever, confusion, or an inability to urinate.
