We Attended ASN Kidney Week! Here’s What Patients Need to Know…

Each year, nephrologists from across the country gather at ASN Kidney Week to share research, clinical insights, and emerging approaches to kidney care. This year’s conference took place in Houston, bringing together physicians, researchers, and industry leaders to discuss new developments in the field and what they mean for patients. ANC’s Dr. Doyle, who attended Kidney Week in November, sat down with us to share her insights and give patients a glimpse into the future of patient care.

A Decade of Progress

Dr. Doyle noted that one of the most encouraging aspects of this year’s meeting was the volume of positive research findings. Over the past five to ten years, kidney care has seen a steady expansion of effective medications and treatment strategies such as GLP1s, SGLT2 inhibitors, and injectables. Where options were once limited, providers now have a growing set of tools supported by strong clinical evidence. Many of the studies presented focused on results from recent years as well, reinforcing that progress in kidney care is ongoing and accelerating.

Back to Basics

Aside from the up-and-coming therapies, the recurring theme at ASN Kidney Week was the importance of returning to the fundamentals of kidney care, particularly blood pressure control. As many patients know, maintaining healthy blood pressure remains one of the most effective ways to protect kidney function! What has changed is how personalized that approach has become. With a wider range of medications available, nephrologists can work more closely with patients to find regimens that are both effective and well-tolerated, helping patients feel more involved in their care.

Alternatives to Traditional Treatment

The conference also highlighted emerging options for patients who struggle with traditional treatment approaches. A highly anticipated one is renal denervation, a minimally invasive procedure designed to help manage difficult-to-control blood pressure by interrupting specific nerve signals to the kidneys. Dr. Doyle shared that this approach has shown promising safety and effectiveness based on the studies shared, and it is already being offered in some care settings, including here in the Twin Cities! Be sure to connect with us for more information if this is a route you’d like to learn more about.

What This Means for Patients

As research continues to evolve, the ANC team remains committed to staying informed, exploring new opportunities, and partnering with patients every step of the way. As we begin the new year, we encourage patients to stay connected with us for updates on emerging kidney care developments and future clinical trials.
